Qualifications

What you actually need to qualify

To teach Mat Pilates professionally in the UK, you need a Level 3 Mat Pilates qualification that is Ofqual-regulated and CIMSPA-endorsed. That’s the standard gyms, studios and insurers recognise. Most providers also ask for a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification, or equivalent experience, before you start Level 3.

Level 2 Gym Instructor

Or equivalent prior experience

Most providers ask for a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification, or equivalent movement teaching experience, before you enrol on Level 3. It covers the anatomy and exercise basics the Pilates qualification builds on. If you’re not sure whether your background counts, we’ll check it with you first.

Step by step

How to become a Mat Pilates instructor

There’s a clear route into the industry, and it maps to the same journey every Create learner follows. Most people move through these stages.

1

Choose an Ofqual-regulated, CIMSPA-endorsed course

This is the single most important decision. Check the Ofqual register for the specific qualification title, and check the CIMSPA partner list to confirm endorsement. Without both, you risk paying for a qualification gyms and studios won’t recognise. Ask the provider for the awarding body name (Active IQ, YMCA Awards and Focus Awards are all common) and verify it yourself.

2

Complete your training and teaching hours

Mat Pilates training is less time-intensive than Reformer, but still demanding. Most programmes combine online theory with in-person practical weekends. Build a study routine that protects the practice hours, not just the theory. Trying to fit Level 3 around a busy schedule without planning is where most dropouts happen.

3

Pass your final assessment

Assessment usually involves teaching a full class to an assessor, plus a written or oral component on programming, anatomy and modifications. The taught class is the part most people underestimate. You’re assessed on cueing, presence, programming logic and how you adapt for mixed-ability participants. A few mock classes with a senior teacher beforehand make a real difference.

4

Get your first regular slot

Three things move the needle in your first six months. Offer cover: tell every gym and studio manager in your area you’re available for last-minute classes, and show up reliably when called. Cover leads to audition slots, which lead to regular classes. Then build a simple teaching CV listing your qualification, your years of practice and any client work from training.
